A three-day experiential workshop facilitated by Karen Shepherd and Chris Thomas in partnership with Mind and Body Learning and Development Ltd
When: 17-19 November 2010
Where: MBLD, 395A Manukau Road, Epsom Auckland
Cost: $ 895.00 (GST inclusive) includes, course workbook and handouts, morning, afternoon teas, lunches and certification (optional post- workshop skills assessment also available for an additional cost of $280.00).
This workshop will include:
- Defining professional supervision and the context of supervision within Aotearoa/New Zealand
- Relationship building and contracting
- Developmental dynamics
- Skills, tools and processes
- Reflective practice
- Ethical decision making in supervision
- Group team and peer models of supervision
- A strengths-based approach to supervision will underpin the course content and process
Who is the workshop for?
Anyone who is in a supervisory role in Mental Health and Addictions Services. Emphasis will be placed on supervision by and for people with lived experience of mental distress and/or addiction.

We have been working together as trainers since 2005 developing a framework around strengths-based practice with a specific focus on the Aotearoa/NZ context.
We have developed and run a range of training programmes for both professional supervision and strengths-based practice for social workers, allied health professionals and community organisations. We are also professional supervisors in private practice and are passionate about collaborative supervision
Places are limited to twenty participants (minimum of 12 participants)
Our approach to professional development is: Experiential and interactive learning, expertise led (not expert driven), creative, innovative, fun and practical

A great opportunity to gain an understanding of the Treaty and its present-day implications
Susan Healy has a doctorate in Maori Studies, specialising in treaty-related issues. She has gained much experience as a facilitator delivering Treaty of Waitangi workshops over the past 20 years to a wide range of community and professional groups. Her workshops are designed to be informative, interactive and enjoyable and feedback from participants has confirmed this. Susan’s aim for the workshops are that participants are better informed about the Treaty and how it can apply to their work and their organisation. She believes that everyone has something of value to bring to the Treaty relationship.
Content
The workshop is designed for people working in mental health who want to increase their understanding of the Treaty and its application to their work. The workshop will be conducted so that you can raise questions about the Treaty in a safe, non-confrontational and participatory process.
- Historical background to the signing of the Treaty
- Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi and the similarities and differences between the Maori & English texts
- The history of what has happened since 1840
- The impact of legislation and Government action on Maori communities and their health
- The implications of the Treaty for those working in the health and mental health fields.

Certificate in Peer Support (Mental Health)(Level 4)
Peer Support Workers now have a Level 4 NZQA-approved course developed specifically to
meet the needs of their role. We’re offering it in Auckland in August 2010 and Christchurch
October 2010, for employers looking to train new or existing Peer Support Workers.
The challenges of working in Peer Support are unique. You are required to bring elements of
deeply personal experience into a professional setting, and to make difficult decisions on a
regular basis about how best to promote recovery. The Certificate in Peer Support ensures your
employees are fully equipped to rise to these challenges, and become great Peer Support
Workers.

NZQA approves Certificate in Peer Support (Mental Health)

The Certificate in Peer Support (Mental Health) has recently been approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and Mind and Body Learning and Development Ltd is accredited to teach it.
The Certificate in Peer Support (Mental Health) is the only course designed specifically for Peer Support Workers that leads to a New Zealand Level 4 qualification: the Certificate in Peer Support (Mental Health) (Level 4). The course is offered exclusively by Mind and Body Learning and Development Ltd.
Service Providers should contact us now to secure places for their Peer Support Workers in 2009. (We do not accept individual fee-paying students).
